The reproduction of Giotto’s fresco showing the meeting of St. Francis with Ayyubid Sultan al-Malik al-Kamil was made for the Holy See pavilion at Expo Dubai 2020.
It is placed in a small round-shaped loop as if it were a cylinder open on one side.
This installation begins the journey of visitors who can get close to the work to the point of touching it, appreciating the workmanship on authentic lime wall in every way similar to the traditional fresco.
The original work, attributed to Giotto, is located in Assisi in the basilica Maggiore and measures 230×270 cm, smaller than the reproduction that was enlarged for exhibition needs.
A pictorial intervention also allowed the reconstruction of the fire to recall the famous test Francis underwent before the Sultan.
The reproduction was shipped to Dubai rolled in one piece of size 413×365 cm and then pasted on the curved wall.
